Teenage Depression

Depression is a mental and emotional health issue that can interfere with a person's social life, occupation and their livelihood. A person dealing with depression must work through feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, unwarranted guilt and suicidal thoughts.

All together, the struggle that depression presents can seriously disrupt a person's life. Obviously this is a large problem for adults, but is magnified for teens.
What makes teenage depression different from depression in adults?

Book Spotlight:
"Boys Adrift" by
Dr Leonard Sax, MD, Ph.D

In his book, Dr. Sax mentions five categories which, in his opinion, have contributed to the lack of motivation and poor grades of many boys:Changes in education
  • Video games
  • Medications for ADHD
  • Endocrine disruptors in the environment
  • The decline and disintegration of the masculine ideal
Many kindergarten programs teach basic reading and writing and Dr. Sax states that many 5 year old boys are neither mentally ready for such lessons nor capable of sitting for long periods and are already experiencing 'turn-off' mode in kindergarten.

Is the Internet Becoming Addiction?

Almost everyone spends a significant portion of their day surfing the Internet, but is our collective web compulsion becoming an addiction for some of us?

Although it is not officially listed as a diagnosable mental health disorder, it is under consideration, modeled after gambling disorder and recognized as a legitimate addiction in Europe and parts of Asia. In Amsterdam, Holland, The Smith & Jones Center was created as the first addiction facility for the treatment of internet and video game disorders, with South Korea declaring internet addiction a public health crisis.
Teen Insomnia Linked with Depression and Anxiety

A study of high school students has shed new light on the links between insomnia-related mental health conditions among teens. "People with insomnia find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep for as long as they need to. This is a widespread sleep disorder among the general public, and in most countries about 11% of teens aged 13-16 years experience insomnia at some stage," one researcher said.

Association Between Childhood ADHD and Obesity

One of the most common pediatric psychiatric disorders is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the most common therapy for ADHD is stimulant medication. In the past few decades, concerns have been raised about a possible link between ADHD and the rapid increase in obesity rates among children.

In the April 2014 Pediatrics study, "Attention Deficit Disorder, Stimulant Use, and Childhood Body Mass Index Trajectory," (published online March 17), researchers studied electronic health record data from the Geisinger Health System on 163,820 children aged 3 to 18 years of age in Pennsylvania.
