Substance abuse is an insidious disease. Mental illness can tear families apart. When an individual deals with addiction and mental illness, these are known as co-occurring conditions. It is not unusual for an alcoholic to be clinically depressed or for a person diagnosed with depression to develop a drinking problem. Many individuals with mental illness self-medicate with alcohol and drugs. In order to be effective, treatment must address both conditions.
White River Academy specializes in treating co-occurring conditions. Underlying causes fuel addiction; organic, social and environmental factors shape mental illness. Every student at White River Academy receives a thorough assessment during intake. Based on information gathered during this assessment, the student and his case manager draw up a treatment plan. Since WRA is also a school, treatment plans incorporate academia, school activities, therapy and altruistic project management within the community. Each component of the plan serves as treatment.
Treating the big picture
The National Alliance of Mental Illness—NAMI—notes treatment programs which only target substance abuse are not recommended for individuals with co-occurring conditions. Some addiction therapies involve confrontation techniques; others discourage the use of medications which can be habit forming. These strategies are counter-productive to treating someone with a behavioral or mood disorder.
Studies show when mental illness and substance abuse are treated concurrently, suicide attempts and psychotic episodes decrease significantly. Individuals with co-occurring conditions—also referred to as dual diagnosis patients—typically do not fare well in exclusive 12-step programs. Peer groups which deal with addiction problems and mental health conditions at the community level are more beneficial to dual-diagnosed patients. Communal interaction promotes self-control and positive self-awareness. Studies also prove healthy recreational activities are integral for treating co-occurring conditions.
What White River Academy offers
White River Academy utilizes treatment modalities which treat the root causes of addiction and mental illness. Our program treats the following conditions:
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder—OCD
- Bipolar disorder
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Panic disorder—panic attacks
Rehab is expensive and must be worth every penny. A young man who completes treatment only to relapse within a month deserves better. If he has co-occurring conditions and receives treatment for alcoholism but not depression, of course he will relapse. The same holds true for treating bipolar disorder but ignoring an OxyContin addiction. Co-occurring conditions constitute an insidious symbiosis. One condition may mask or camouflage another. White River Academy’s specialized programs are designed to treat co-occurring conditions. Our programs are what distinguish us from other treatment centers.
