Often called talk therapy, therapy or counseling, psychotherapy focuses on healing the mind and helping individuals learn more constructive ways to deal with their problems and issues. Psychotherapy, in its broadest sense, is the treatment of disorders with a psychologist, psychiatrist or another mental health professional.


Therapists use a number of different psychotherapy approaches, one of which is psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis aims to help people understand themselves and their interactions with others. This type of therapy examines the unconscious mind as that is where many impulse behaviors are thought to originate. Tapping into the unconscious mind allows the individual to acknowledge conflicting and negative feelings. In this form of therapy, patients often discuss their childhood experiences and how those experiences relate to their current behaviors.

Behavioral therapy

Another type of psychotherapy is behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapy is an umbrella for multiple techniques aimed at replacing undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones. One type of behavioral therapy is behavior modification, a structured approach designed to help individuals seek positive outcomes and participate in socially reinforcing activities. Behavior modification focuses on self-monitoring, social interactive activities and role playing so individuals learn how to develop healthy social behaviors and relationships in society. This behavioral technique works to change behaviors that are not beneficial to the individual, or modifies certain challenging or destructive behaviors to more positive and healthy ones. This type of therapy can also prevent individuals from becoming isolated from society.

Other behavioral therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy, both of which are key components of White River Academy’s therapeutic approach.

Cognitive therapy

Cognitive therapy focuses on how current thought processes influence behavior and feelings. By controlling their thought patterns, patients can then control their actions. This type of therapy does not focus on past behavior but rather on the present. Cognitive therapy also focuses on concepts such as maladaptive cognition, the goal of which is to eliminate behaviors and habits that are destructive for patients. With the proper care, reconditioning is possible for patients.

Humanistic therapy

Humanistic therapy is yet another form of psychotherapy. This emphasizes individuals reaching their full potential and enabling them to make decisions with common sense. Treating others with respect and dignity is another main focus. Different forms of humanistic therapy include person-centered therapy, existential therapy and gestalt therapy. Person-centered therapy places special emphasis on the patient’s experiences. Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s freedom and independence. Gestalt therapy is centered on self-discipline in the present. Humanistic therapists might also gain an understanding of the patient’s creativity and the role it plays in the patient’s life.

Pharmacological treatment

Although White River Academy’s treatment approach focuses on psychotherapy, medication might be used as an adjunct treatment.
