The three pillars of our philosophy

Frederick Douglass once remarked, “it is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”

Like houses, people need strong foundations to succeed in life. A strong foundation makes one resilient against the storms that can come up years – and sometimes decades – later. Life’s a steady parade of challenges, and sometimes we face those challenges earlier in life than we’d like. Maybe those changes come from decisions made without a full understanding of the consequences. Or maybe those challenges come from trauma experienced too young; or perhaps the ability to deal with challenges is hampered by disorder or addiction.

Our mission at White River Academy isn’t to punish; we aren’t a prison or a home for bad boys. We mentor boys to become strong, decent and good men, by identifying and removing the masks boys can hide behind. Our school does this by using tools from a broad spectrum of psychological and behavioral treatment programs, which help guide your son on his journey through treatment.

Strength, discipline, respect

Although WRA tailors instruction and treatment to the particular needs of our individual students, there are three distinct areas White River Academy addresses to help develop a teen in turmoil into the man he is meant to be:

Our mission statement

The Importance of surroundings

We deliberately chose to locate our school in the town of Delta, Utah, because the rural setting offers both security and a sense of community to our students. Delta gives students access to internships, jobs, sports and volunteer opportunities while the town’s rural setting reduces social pressures, demands and distractions. The location also offers opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor activities. This is important, as one of our program’s most vital components is developing physical strength in an environment of positive social interaction and personal change.

Our unique combination of challenging outdoor physical activities and extensive project service within the local community enhances a teen’s sense of purpose and creativity, dissolves feelings of entitlement and helps boys look outside themselves to discover a life worth living. This personal growth starts them down the path to becoming men. We move students away from drug or alcohol abuse, behavioral issues and excessive gaming or social media use.

White River’s program provides perspective and challenge for boys in the form of a “developmental vacation.” We will provide them with the tools to fulfill their potential and become the men they are meant to be.
