It’s a matter of trust
Every student starting at a boarding school is nervous. What’s it going to be like? Is the work going to be difficult? Are the teachers mean? What’s expected of me?
It’s not just students who are concerned. Parents are naturally apprehensive about sending their sons away, particularly to a place that specializes in intervention and treatment. Perhaps you’ve even read about trouble at other treatment centers.
Rest easy: we are a licensed and accredited provider of behavioral health care. White River Academy, WRA, is staffed by professionals with years of experience in educating, caring for and working with young people. Below, a list of our qualifications.
Licensing and accreditation
White River Academy is licensed as a residential treatment center through the state of Utah’s Department of Human Services. This means that we meet and follow all the legal requirements to practice in the state of Utah. We meet the requirements to offer room and board and specialized treatment and rehabilitation for people with emotional, psychological, developmental, or behavioral dysfunctions, impairments, or chemical dependencies.
White River Academy is proud of its certification from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, or SEVIS. This certification allows us to accept international students who fulfill SEVIS requirements, expanding our opportunities for treatment. We can provide international students with career and educational opportunities that may have not been available in their home country.
By opening up our doors to students from all walks of life, we hope to create opportunities for education and recovery that were otherwise unattainable in another country. It also provides a more rich experience for all of our students, immersing them in each other’s cultures during their stay.
Our school now features ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers and translators. International students will be encouraged to speak English since group activities and therapies are conducted primarily in that language. Students are encouraged to learn English, hopefully becoming fluent by graduation for those who were already proficient.
SEVIS is regulated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is the investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

White River Academy is accredited as an educational institution approved to offer instruction for grades 9-12 in the state of Utah. The accreditation is through the Northwest Academic Accreditation Commission, a division of AdvancEd. You can view our accreditation here. Our accreditation means a transcript or high school diploma from White River Academy is accepted by all other accredited educational institutions throughout the United States. Accreditation by AdvancEd is a voluntary method of quality assurance distinguishing schools which adhere to a high set of academic standards. It ensures every element of the school compliments the whole, creating a strong program. It involves internal self-review and periodic external assessment to ensure a quality education for the students. AdvancEd accreditation is utilized by educational systems and academic institutions around the world.
White River Academy also ensures that each staff member holds the appropriate license, credential, or certification for his or her role, if applicable. The teachers at White River Academy hold credentials granted by the Utah State Office of Education. The therapists who provide treatment at White River Academy are all licensed with the state of Utah in their respective divisions. In addition, White River Academy conducts rigorous background checks on all employees.
NATSAP members consist of approved therapeutic schools, residential treatment schools, wilderness programs, outdoor therapeutic programs, young adult programs and home-based residential programs that work with troubled adolescents.
